چکیده

Methods In a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 1018 infants in high risk for allergy received from birth to 6 months either a mixture of preand probiotics, or placebo. They were followed for the emergence of allergic diseases and sensitisation for 5 years. In an unselected group of 48 infants receiving probiotics and 52 receiving placebo, we measured fecal levels of human neutrophil peptide (HNP) 1-3, b-defensin 2 (HBD2) with enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) at the age of 3 and 6 months. TNF-a and calprotectin had been measured with ELISA, and a1-antitrypsin with an immunodiffusion method in a proportion of samples.

Comparison of the Effect of Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and Beta-Defensin 1 Protein on Human Sperm Motility and Viability in Different Times of Incubation

Background and Objectives: Antioxidant alpha lipoic acid and β-defensin 1 protein may have a positive effect on the quality of sperm parameters. In this study, the effect of sperm incubation with alpha lipoic acid antioxidant and β-defensin 1 protein were assessed on sperm motility and viability at different times.   Methods: In this experimental study, routine semen analysis was carried out o...

Oral Antimicrobial Peptides and Biological Control of Caries

The presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in saliva may be a biological factor that contributes to susceptibility or resistance to caries. This manuscript will review AMPs in saliva, consider their antimicrobial and immunomodulatory functions, and evaluate their potential role in the oral cavity for protection of the tooth surface as well as the oral mucosa. These AMPs are made in salivary ...

Enteric beta-defensin: molecular cloning and characterization of a gene with inducible intestinal epithelial cell expression associated with Cryptosporidium parvum infection.

A growing body of evidence suggests that endogenous antibiotics contribute to the innate defense of mammalian mucosal surfaces. In the cow, beta-defensins constitute a large family of antibiotic peptides whose members have been previously isolated from the respiratory and oral mucosa, as well as circulating phagocytic cells. A novel bovine genomic clone with beta-defensin-related sequence [corr...

Contribution of alpha- and beta-defensins to lung function decline and infection in smokers: an association study

BACKGROUND Alpha-defensins, which are major constituents of neutrophil azurophilic granules, and beta-defensins, which are expressed in airway epithelial cells, could contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by amplifying cigarette smoke-induced and infection-induced inflammatory reactions leading to lung injury. In Japanese and Chinese populations, two different ...

Markers of gut mucosal inflammation and cow’s milk specific immunoglobulins in non-IgE cow’s milk allergy

BACKGROUND Allergy to cow's milk protein (CMP) may cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in the absence of CMP specific IgE. The immunological mechanisms involved in such disease are not fully understood. Therefore we examined markers of gut mucosal inflammation and the immunoglobulin profiles in children with Gl symptoms suspected of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). PATIENTS AND METHODS We ...
